We have been exposed, in our travels, to terrible little things that (at least) a friend of ours makes called Chocolate Cayenne Truffles, and they are pretty much exactly what they sound like. There is no trick to the making; pick up one's favorite chocolate truffle recipe and add a bunch of cayenne powder to it (I hear tell it's good to dust them with powdered ginger, or some other such thing).

The trick is in the eating. They begin as chocolate, deep and rich, which cuddles the tongue for the briefest of moments before the terror rises up, comes howling out of those happy memories with heat, cutting heat, and the only need is one of getting out, to somehow quell it, and so the search begins for anything to cut through that heat-

Why look! Chocolate. That will work nicely!

And so it goes.

I have before me a tin of citrous sours; one might say that the strength of these sours would arouse a great deal of curiousity. It has been remarked upon in company (although not by me) that the addictive qualities of these tiny bombs of pucker come from the white dust on the surface, which quickly disperses its hit to leave the sweeter core to be delt with. One wants another hit of sour, though.

In an effort to test this theory one might try licking the bottom of the tin, but I don't recommend that.

And so it goes.

We were out last night, and decided to avoid traffic during the rush by eating dinner where we were, and had a very nice pizza with beer. It occured to me that a similiar thing most probably causes me to eat too much pizza; I feel I am morally required to consume the crusts, but crusts make me pine for sauce and cheese to top them...

But it was probably the beer.

And so it goes.
